Founder and Chief Investigator Dan Seiler (Ret. MD State Police) is a
private professional polygraph examiner with over 24 years of polygraph
experience. He is a member in good standing of the American Polygraph
Association, and has qualified as a polygraph expert in both State and
Federal courts for both defense and prosecution.
How Polygraph Testing Works
A polygraph instrument is basically a combination of medical devices
that are used to monitor changes occurring in the body. As a person is
questioned about a certain event or incident, the examiner looks to see
how the person's heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate and electro-dermal
activity (sweatiness, in this case of the fingers) change in comparison to normal
levels. Fluctuations may indicate that person is being deceptive, but exam results
are open to interpretation by the examiner. (Description courtesy of HowStuffWorks.com)
Uses of Polygraph Testing
Polygraph testing is often employed in criminal investigations, pre-employment screening, national security, internal affairs investigations, life-style tests for fidelity and other domestic cases.
Laws Governing Polygraph Testing
Polygraph test results are generally not admissible in the pre-conviction
phases of a trial. However, polygraph does get admitted in post-conviction
hearings. More importantly the results are widely accepted by prosecutors and
may be a deciding factor in moving charges forward. Polygraph has undergone
various studies to prove validity and reliability and in the future polygraph
may be admissible.
